Well, I’d be lieing if I said this post didn’t start out as another PokemonGo segment, but then I wanted to make it BLEACH-centric. And because my brain can’t think of a “cool” name for the BLEACH segment, the entire thing gets renamed. Lol. So, this is the test-run of “Kakuchi Kara Kotoba” (I really don’t wanna use KKK as an acronym, LMFAO). The first three words are actually from Pokemon, but were all heard in Bleach after learning them.

Anyways, let’s begin…

「もらう」

to receive; to take (Kanji: 貰う)

This was one of the first words I encountered while playing Pokemon Gold in Japanese; it was presented to me when I received my PokeGear. Ever since, whenever I receive something (hence, the definition) I see something like 「ゴールドはきのみをもらった！」, which translates to “Gold received a berry!” [SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT!] Imagine my surprise when no more than a few days have passed, and while I’m watching Bleach (the episode where Chad and the ninja who creates walls from his attacks are fighting), the ninja hides in his own walls and, before surprising Chad, thinks 「もらった！！！」. I, of course, had to pause, rewind, and play it over a few times, then re-lookup もらう. That’s when I notice “to take” as well, and it all makes sense. In that sense, you could say the ninja was saying “Gotcha!”.

「とびだす」

to jump out; to appear sudddenly (Kanji: 飛び出す)

I actually heard this word before I learnt it, just never knew what it meant. While playing Pokemon, whenever you encounter a Pokemon, it always says something like 「やせいのコラッタがとびだしてきた！」　(“A wild Koratta [Rattata] jumps out!”) After defining the word and adding it to my Anki, I go to watch some Bleach… and no it’s actually not in a Bleach episode… so far. lol I tend to like listening to opening/ending songs (which some of my friends don’t… and it confuses me), so I have all my good anime/tokusatsu songs downloaded. Chu-Bura, the opening intro for the Captian Amagai-arc, is one of my favorites, and after hearing the song, 「とびだったいける」 comes out loud and clear (something like “Go jump out!”, though I could be wrong, as いける slightly confuses me) .

Edit: I just downloaded “Blue Bird” by Ikimono Gakari, one of the openings to Naruto Shippuden… whaddya know? I hear とびだす. Lol. Just thought I’d share.

「りゆう」

reason; pretext; motive (Kanji: 理由)

This is the last one that comes from Pokemon. I don’t remember where and when I heard this in Pokemon, I just know it’s on my list of words to remember from that game. It wasn’t a particular difficult word to remember, just kinda random (to me). But now I think I’ll always remember it, now that I’ve heard it being used. [SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT!] In an episode I just finished watching (somewhere around 184), Renji is trying to explain why he’s trying to stop the Captain from following his orders, explaining how he knows Rukia and Ichigo the best and that there must be a reason why they’re doing what they’re doing. The word slipped past me at first, but when my brain caught up, I had to rewind and listen again. After a slight pause from Renji, he used 「りゆう」 loud and clear, and I think I smiled. ^_^ I would give the whole sentence, but I think it’s a long one… Lol.

「たのむ」

to request; to beg; to ask; to call; to order; to reserve; to entrust to; to rely on

Finally! I’m not sure where I learnt this word from. There’s a chance it was Pokemon, but it’s not on my list. The chances are greater for me having learnt it from Samurai Sentai Shinkenger, in which I heard 「たのむぞ！」 just yesterday. Anyways, in the same episode I heard 「りゆう」, by the same person, in the SAME conversation, Renji says 「たのむ！」. I was a little lost, as the subbers translated it as “Please!”, but after remembering not everything is so literal, I changed the “Please” to “I beg of you”, which still fits, and the use of “Please” was understood. I believe in the episode prior to the one I’m referring to, たのむ was used by Ichigo-tachi when they were in the sewers, as well, and in that situation it was translated/understood to mean “I’m counting on you.”

「かんけいない」

”It’s none of your business/concern; This doesn’t concern you” (Kanji: 関係ない)

FINALLY. I pure Bleach word. Bleach seems to be famous for this word/phrase, as I’ve heard it almost every 2-5 episodes since I started watching the subs. The first time I sat down and listened to it, however, was when Orihime dissapeared. When Ichigo goes back to the school, Tatsuki tries to convince Ichigo to tell her where she is. Only Ichigo’s mouth is shown, and you hear 「お前には…かんけいないよ」 (“This doesn’t concern you”)… which is followed by an award-winning punch. Ever since then, I’ve heard mainly Ichigo use it, but a few others every once in a while.

… Damn that trip to Florida. By the time I got back, I had about 5 posts, and the staff at Jeros’ blog kept adding more and more things! >< Soooo… I wound up skipping a few, but they weren't very important things. However, one of them was about the tour, but to not kill my motivation (I still have a HUUUUUGE backlog of words/phrases from Pokemon Gold I need to find example sentences for), I skipped it. I'll try my best to not skip so many next time. Anyways, let's get through some explaining…

Doing these translations is really preparing me for what I think I'm going to be doing for the rest of my life. I've been on a forum group called Honyaku for a while. I've noticed how sometimes the people will say they have to research things in order to see how to properly translate it. It never really occurred to me what they were doing until I started doing translations of my own. I've never heard of Chaku-Uta, so of course I had to do some research on it. I'm still not entirely sure of what it is, but it seems to be a download for mobile devices… or something. Lol.

In the second post, I got a little confused by what the portion in red could mean. It kinda makes sense in my head, but seeing the ellipses at the end of both sentences just confused me more. I’m probably going to have to do a little more research regarding how the Japanese use ellipses, but I think I did my best to translate what the staff was trying to get across.

Lucky me, the third post was pretty much just a link. I couldn’t find out how to view the video, but that’s probably because I wasn’t reading/paying attention. -Sigh- And even after all of this, I’m confused: is the PV released or not?? The posts keep claiming it’s out, but pictures on the blog say the 19th. @__@ I’ll.. try to find out and let you all know.

… You probably looked at the title and thought, “WTF?” Lol. But you’d be surprised at all the places you can actually learn a language from. I’ve always been a fan of the Pokemon game series (not so much the anime, lol) and continue to play them to this day. Recently, I got a little more devoted to learning Japanese and decided I would challenge myself: import the new Pokemon game, HeartGold, and play it.

With this goal in mind, I set out to prepare myself for the challenge that awaits. As I mentioned before, I “acquired” a copy of the original Pokemon Gold game and have been playing through it for a few days now. Because I’m not anywhere near fluency, I’ve had to stop after pretty much every word, and have acquired a list of AT LEAST 80+ words and phrases, and I just got through my tour of the second town (‘tour’ as in the old man guided me, not me exploring through all the buildings… I still need to do that, lol). With this massive list and all the example sentences piled into my Anki, I figured why not share? I’ll go over a few of the words/phrases each time, picking ones that I find to be really useful, catchy, surprising, etc.

「どうりで」

”It’s no wonder” (Kanji: 道理で)

This is one of the first words I encountered playing Gold, said by Prof. Oak, who, to my surprise, is named オーキド (Orchid). It means something along the lines of “It’s no wonder” or “Indeed”. The example sentence for this in my Anki is as follows:
「道理で、君が喜ぶわけだ」 (どうりで、きみ　が　よろこぶ　わけ　だ)

That sentence basically means “It’s no wonder you’re so happy.” Most of the uses of 「どうりで」 that I see are in the beginning, and whenever it is, 「わけ] almost always seems to be attached to the end of the sentence.

「わけ」

”conclusion from reasoning” (Kanji: 訳)

After some research,「わけ」appears to mean something like “conclusion from reasoning”. With this in mind, the previous sentence now moreso says “It’s no wonder ‘you’re so happy’ is my conclusion”. Yea, translated very literally, but it’s only so the different parts can be understood. From learning that one sentence, we’ve been able to learn another ‘word’. Great, huh?

A “live example” of 「わけ」 can be heard here at 1:03 (or ep 179 of Bleach, at 17:45 for those with the full episode). Bleach actually uses 「わけわかんない」 a lot: in at least two of their songs, in the linked-to episode, and somewhere in the eps where Uryuu was fighting the yo-yo Arrancar (I know I heard it!! I remember thinking “HEY! It’s the line from TsumaSaki!!”.. and now I can’t find it. :() The sentence literally says “I don’t understand the reasoning”.

Anyways, back to Pokemon examples!

「りゃくして」

”a.k.a. / also known as” (Kanji: 略して)

This was presented to me either when the game first says Pocket Monsters/Pokemon, or when I received the PokeGear (I think it was the latter). A simple example sentence, such as 「新しい曲りゃくして新曲」 (あたらしいきょく　りゃくして　しんきょく), is all that is needed by me to understand how to use the word. When first began trying to read the Jero posts over a year ago, I ran across 「新曲」（しんきょく）, and remembered that the meaning was “new song”. I then realized that the first kanji was the one used in 「新しい」(あたらしい）, the word for “new”. “New” + “Song” = New song. From that, I learned that 「新」can be put in front of a lot of other different nouns to form new words. Back to the point: the example sentence utilizes this knowledge of what I just explained. It doesn’t translate correctly in English, as it literally says “‘New song’ is another name for ‘new song’”, but… it’s understandable as long as it stays in Japanese. ^_^;;; A good example sentence of this is kind of hard to find for some reason, so I’ll explain it this way: find an English sentence with the phrase “also known as/better known as/etc”, take that out, and replace it with 「りゃくして」. That’s pretty much what it does. 「りゃくして」 is also the ーて form of the verb 「りゃくす」 which means “to abbreviate; to omit”.

「とこ」

”almost”

When my Mother in Pokemon Gold first said the phrase 「わすれるとこだったわ！」 I got REALLY lost. I did a few searches, but was still confused. Lucky me, I somehow remembered playing Gold waaaaaaaaay back in the day and somehow remembered that she said “I almost forgot!”. I examined the sentence a bit more and found this to be the accurate translation for it. I also managed to find another example sentence which confirmed this: 「 また入院するとこだった」, which means “I was almost hospitalized again”. To use 「とこ」, you just add it after the ‘dictionary form’ of a verb. In the sentences I’ve seen with it, 「だった」 was normally added afterwards (「だった」 is the ‘past tense’ of 「だ」, which is the less formal version of 「です」)

Last word!

「まちがいない」

”I’m sure; No doubt about it” (Kanji: 間違いない)

Our final ‘word’ is actually more of a phrase. The sentence in my Anki deck reads as 「彼ならまちがいない」 (かれなら　まちがいない）, which means “If it’s him, then I’m sure.” 「間違いない」literally means “no mistake” (「間違い」　= mistake, 「ない」 = not). Not too much explanation on this, other than the fact that right after I learned this word, I heard it on Bleach. ^_^

I think this is it for the first PokemonGo (I couldn’t think of any other interesting title, lol). I’ll post some more interesting finds and other cool stuff next time. :) I would like to point out that any beginner can play the Pokemon games in Japanese, as the ENTIRE game is in kana! This can be a little hard for some, but it’s actually very useful. Reading and learning in kana actually helps my listening, as I know what I’m listening for when I do listen. :) As a result, all of the sentences from Pokemon that are in my Anki has the specific word/phrase in kana instead of kanji (unless it’s just TOO easy, like 「夢中」(むちゅう), which means something like “daze” or “in a trance”. It’s just “dream” and “inside”! Plus, it’s in the ending song for Shinkenger, and it’s just too easy. As a result, I have that in kanji) Try it sometimes!

First, this image was posted on a post from the 7th. Apparently, you can start downloading TsumeAto. However, those without phones capable of reading this will probably be left out. More than likely, an actual link to go to has been posted somewhere, I just don’t know where at this moment.

Secondly, the PV seems to be coming out soon: August 19th. I haven’t translated the entire post, but it seems to be a fact about the release date.

Aaah. That was a fun one. I went back the old method of looking up each unfamiliar kanji in Kanji Sonomama first. Everything else was stuff I already knew, or things I found out with Rikai-chan. I also tried to make the text a little less directly translated (for example, translating 「お楽しみに」 as “Stay Tuned!” instead of “Please look forward to it!”).

Well, Jero fans, with this blog post, we discover Jero and his blog staff are going to tell us about all the songs on the album! I thought I translated that part wrong, but I went back to Jero’s blog and into the archives to when Covers was released and, to my enjoyment, there are descriptions for for the songs! Wooooow… 久しぶり～！ Sorry about that. For some odd reason, I lost all devotion to translate Jero postings. But, hopefully they won’t go away again! (I’m glad I went through this now instead of when I tried to do this professionally.) There are three other blog postings before this one, but the first two talked about nothing in particular, and the one right before this was basically telling everyone to look out for this post. Due to lost motivation, I didn’t translate this like I normally would (ban Rikai-chan until the end). :( I feel kinda bad… I didn’t do my normal routine. BUT, hopefully, I’ll get back into the swing of things soon.

The only difficult part of this was the names of the places, and how to translate the contact information. I feel like I did a pretty decent job, so nothing is colored in like it normally is, but feel free to send any comments my way with corrections, suggestions, tip, and or whatever. Pretty much all the locations came from Rikai-chan’s name dictionary, while the names of the places it was being held at came from the places official web site.

I really wish all of this was being televised… -Sigh- Oh well. Maybe a fan will record it and Youtube it for us?

I’ve always been a fan of the Pokemon games. Even if I don’t watch the show anymore, I still buy and play the (main) games. I’ve played Red, Blue, and Yellow; Gold, Silver, and Crystal; Sapphire and Emerald; LeafGreen; and, Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, as well as almost all of the different Pokemon Stadiums and other console versions. As any Pokemon fan should know, HeartGold and SoulSilver, remakes of the old Gold and Silver games that came out ten years ago, are set to be released on September 12th of this year. I plan on buying a Japanese copy of HeartGold and play it, then buy SoulSilver when it get’s released in America. However, I know I have a tough journey ahead of me. A game entirely in Japanese? That’s why I’ve been training these past few days.

I went and found a -coughcoughromandemulatorcoughcough- Japanese version* of Pokemon Gold from way back, and have been playing that. I figured that the script would be pretty much the same without too many changes. I’ve had to stop after almost every word, but I feel like it’s worth it. I’m learning sooo much from it! =) 41 cards have been added to my Anki deck, each with a different word or phrase, along with an example sentence to help me with practice. I’ve even learned things that weren’t exactly specified on the cards, like how to say something like “I should have [insert verb here]…” or “I almost [insert verb here]”.

I think I’m going to put up some sort of lesson based on what I’ve gathered from the game so far. お楽しみに！ (…It would’ve sounded weird if I said that in English, lol)

I was a little skeptical at first glance, but I’m glad I watched the whole thing. It’s nothing but a trailer for HEROES, but it has JAPANESE SUBTITLES! ^_^ Granted it doesn’t have furigana over the kanji, a little drawing done by me (yay practice!) on Kanji Sonomama and some radical searching in JWPCE “quickly” clarified any misunderstandings.

Enough of the back story. Here’s the trailer for HEROES Season 1.

I took as many of the subtitles as I could and broke them down; I believe I skipped no more than three, either because they were too complex or too simple. Having an accurate English translation and then Japanese subtitles really helped. The only thing that could have made it better was furigana, but I’ll live. Without further ado, here are the sentences in the order they appear:

Only one of the ones I did truly stumped me, as what Isaac is saying doesn’t blend with what the Japanese subtitles imply. In English he’s saying “I have to stop it”, but the subtitles seem to say “I can’t stop it”:

「これを止めないと」　ころ　を　やめない　と

My guess is that the 「と」 at the end does something to this sentence, similar to the 「な」 in 「動くな！」. I was also unsure of the 「ばす」 at the end of #5, but it doesn’t seem to alter the meaning from what the English was, so I didn’t worry about it too much. However, if anyone out there has any experience with those, please feel free to leave a comment, or send me a message and I’ll update accordingly.

For those followers of AJATT, you just got eight more sentences! :) This brings my total sentence count to… TEN! Yea, I’ve been slacking… horribly. Lol. Enjoy.
