I’ve been stuck trying to think up something else to constantly add to the blog in relation to Japanese learning. I don’t have enough command over the Japanese language to really give tips and strategy guides like everyone else, so I’ve felt a bit dependent on JERO translations to ‘make’ this blog (most of my hits are to my JERO-related posts). However, I don’t want Acid and Chocolate to turn into a JERO fan site (lol) because that is not what it’s intended purpose is. Because of this, I’ve been thinking long and hard over these past few days trying to think of something that I could offer to the Japanese-learning community. While watching Attack of the Show, I randomly got an idea: find some videos on YouTube in Japanese and see if I could make something from that. That sort of failed, but only in the sense of what I was looking for originally. I happened to stumble upon some LOST and HEROES videos…
I was a little skeptical at first glance, but I’m glad I watched the whole thing. It’s nothing but a trailer for HEROES, but it has JAPANESE SUBTITLES! ^_^ Granted it doesn’t have furigana over the kanji, a little drawing done by me (yay practice!) on Kanji Sonomama and some radical searching in JWPCE “quickly” clarified any misunderstandings.
Enough of the back story. Here’s the trailer for HEROES Season 1.
I took as many of the subtitles as I could and broke them down; I believe I skipped no more than three, either because they were too complex or too simple. Having an accurate English translation and then Japanese subtitles really helped. The only thing that could have made it better was furigana, but I’ll live. Without further ado, here are the sentences in the order they appear:
1.「カメラの準備は？」 カメラ の じゅんび は？
- ”As for the camera’s preparation?”
- “Camera ready?” (by Claire)
2.「人間は進化の段階にある」 にんげん は しんか の だんかい に ある
- ”[You're a] human in a new stage of evolution”
- “You’re a man entering a gateway through evolution.” (by Suresh)
3.「僕は飛べるんだ」 ぼく は とべるん だ
- ”I can fly”
- “I think I can fly” (by Peter)
4.「巨大な爆発だ」 きょだいな ばくはつ
- ”The enourmous explosion”
- “The explosion” (don’t remember who said this)
5.「すべてを吹き飛ぶばす」 すべて を ふきとぶ ばす
- ”Blow everything away”
- “It’ll wipe out the entire city.” (don’t remember who said this)
6.「動くな」 うごく な
- ”Stop moving / Stop running”
- “Freeze!” (can’t remember her name)
7.「何かが自分に起きてる」 なにか が じぶん に おきてる
- ”Something is happening to me”
- “Something is wrong with me” (by Isaac)
8.「それが運命なんだ」 それ が うんめい なんだ
- “That is destiny”
- “It’s destiny” (by Suresh)
Only one of the ones I did truly stumped me, as what Isaac is saying doesn’t blend with what the Japanese subtitles imply. In English he’s saying “I have to stop it”, but the subtitles seem to say “I can’t stop it”:
「これを止めないと」 ころ を やめない と
My guess is that the 「と」 at the end does something to this sentence, similar to the 「な」 in 「動くな！」. I was also unsure of the 「ばす」 at the end of #5, but it doesn’t seem to alter the meaning from what the English was, so I didn’t worry about it too much.
